Revenue growth in third quarter for Canwest

Postmedia Network Inc., which recently purchased Canwest's publishing division, has reported third-quarter gains this fiscal year. The newspaper chain reported an overall revenue increase of one per cent. Despite the continued loss of classified, retail and insert ads, the company experienced a two per cent growth in advertising revenue for the print publication. Meanwhile, digital media revenues decreased 16 per cent, a decline that Postmedia CEO Paul Godfrey attributed to “a change in allocation between reporting segments."

The newspaper industry - Canadian vs. the U.S.

The Canadian print newspaper market is much more buoyant than that in the United States. In 2009, Canadian ad revenues for print newspapers were down 11% (with the media market) vs. the U.S. which was down 29%. Experts predict, that in the U.S., print newspaper revenues will decline in 2010 while in Canada, revenues are expect to grow. The Canadian market is distinctive. Upcoming Event: IFRA Expo

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers will host the 40th annual IFRA industry expo on October 6 to 8 in Hamburg. The two day event will feature a variety of seminars, panel discussions and social events. A week-long study tour covering the latest trends in printing will take palce from Vienna to Hamburg on September 27 to October 2 prior to the expo. Long-time Weyburn Review publisher Ernest Neufeld passes away

Ernest Neufeld, long-time publisher of the Weyburn Review from 1958 to 1992, passed away on July 17 at the age of 82. Neufeld was president of CCNA from 1975 to 1976, and was made an honorary life member of the association in 1995. His Book of Honour entry, which outlines his presidential term and career highlights, can be found here. Funeral services will be held on Friday July 23.

Quebecor withdraws from the Quebec Press Council

Media giant Quebecor has announced its decision to pull out of the province’s voluntary regulatory body.  In a letter to the council Quebecor CEO Pierre-Karl Péladeau claimed the decision to withdraw was based on dissatisfaction with recent rulings involving its newspapers.

Journalist Gwynne Dyer appointed to the Order of Canada

Canadian author and journalist Gwynne Dyer is among the 74 new appointments to the Order of Canada. Born in Newfoundland, Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years. In Canada, Dyer's column appears regularly in newspapers across the country.
